John Wood Takes Weekend Series Win
John Wood Baseball took to the road for their first games of the season and came away victorious against Southern Illinois College Falcons 4-2 on Thursday at Oasis Sports Complex in Alabama.
John Wood opened the scoring in the first after Shawn Hunt singled, scoring one run.
SIC would single down the left field line and tie the game at one in the bottom of the second.
A hard shot double play gave the Blazers the lead, 2-1, in the top of the fourth.
Abram Wiewel would lead things off on the bump for John Wood in game one. He would give up two hits and one run over six innings, striking out nine and walking one. Gabe Wagner tossed one and two-thirds innings of zero-run ball for John Wood in relief. The right-handed pitcher gave up zero hits, striking out one and walking none.
Shawn Hunt drove the middle of the lineup, leading John Wood with two runs batted in. The 3-hole hitter went 2-for-4 on the day. Reid Livingston went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead John Wood in hits. The Blazers had a strong eye at the plate, collecting seven walks for the game. Drew Quinlan and Issac Long led the team with two free passes each. The Blazers also turned two double plays in the game.
The Blazers would face the Falcons again on Friday for game two of three of the series.
Game Two
In Game two of the series, John Wood could not keep pace with SIC Falcons and would lose 6-2 on Friday at Oasis Sports Complex.
SIC Falcons opened the scoring in the first after a double, which led to scoring one run.
The Falcons added to their early lead in the bottom of the second inning after a Blazers error, and a single to center field, each scoring one run.
A walk, and a fielder's choice helped extend the Falcons' early lead in the third.
Zach Light stepped on the bump first for John Wood. He would surrender just two hits and three runs (zero earned) over two innings, striking out two and walking two.
Shawn Hunt provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led the Blazers with two runs batted in. The catcher went 2-for-3 on the day. Evan Sohn and Hunt each collected two hits on the day.
John Wood would take on SIC one more game later that day to decide the series winner.
Game Three
In game three of the series, John Wood would come out victorious against Southern Illinois College by the final of 6-1.
The Blazers got on board early in the top of the second inning after Michael Lucas singled, scoring two runs, Evan Sohn singled, scoring one run, and Blake Bunch grounded out, scoring two runs.
Grayson Coleman led things off on the bump for John Wood, and surrendered three hits and one run over five innings, striking out four and walking none. Andrew Zacha and Mitchell Meier each came on in relief for John Wood and shutdown SIC to help secure the victory.
Michael Lucas led John Wood with two runs batted in from the number eight spot in the lineup. The right-handed hitter went 2-for-3 on the day. John Wood had a strong eye at the plate, amassing eight walks for the game. Sohn and Hunt led the team with two bases on balls each, and John Wood turned one double play in the game.
John Wood (2-1) returns to action on Friday as they travel to Gadsden State Community College for a four-game series that concludes Saturday afternoon.
