Women's Basketball Win's Home Opener
The John Wood Women's Basketball team opened their season at home against the Varsity Reserve squad from Culver Stockton College and came away with a 71-59 win to open their 2025-2026 home slate.
Things got off to a quick start for the Lady Blazers as Kamryn Mitchell would sink back-to-back three pointers towards the end of the first quarter to give the Blazers a 21-18 lead. Belle Roush and Kelsi Chagolla would help get the Lady Blazers going early in the second quarter by scoring the team's first six points.
Taylor Pfaff would chip in a deep three pointer to extend the Lady Blazers led to 32-12 with 6:35 left in the first half. Madison McFerrin and Arielle Graham would help pad that led back-to-back jumpers to close out the half and give the Lady Blazers a 40-34 lead going into the half.
The third quarter seen Belle Roush and Kamryn Mitchell help extend the lead with sold buckets, and great defense from Kelsi Changolla to give the Lady Blazers the 56-40 lead to end the third quarter. John Wood would fend off Culver JV down the stretch thanks to key buckets and great defense.
"We had good moments tonight, and we also seen several things that we need to work on going forward", said first year head coach Kelly Keotters. "We have some tough games this weekend at home with Moberly Area on Friday and Southeastern Iowa on Sunday". We will look to make some adjustments before those games to help prepare us for some tough competition".
The Lady Blazers are now 2-1 on the season and return to action Friday November 14th when the host the Greyhounds of Moberly Area Community College for a 5:30pm tipoff. This weekend marks the annual November Town and Country Inn and Suites for the Lady Blazers.
