The 2018-19 season marked Coach Brad Hoyt’s ninth overall season as the Head Coach of the Trail Blazers, and eighth consecutive at the helm of the basketball program. Hoyt was the head coach during the 2004-05 campaign and, after finishing with 19 victories and a first team All-American (Joel Box), he accepted the head coaching position at NAIA member, Culver Stockton College. Coach Hoyt had the opportunity to be the Head Basketball Coach, Chair of the Sport Management Program, and instructor at the Canton, MO four year institution for three years and returned to JWCC for the 2008-09 campaign.

Coach Hoyt has a strong history with JWCC basketball, as he was a part of the second recruiting class in the history of the program, playing for Coach Mike Elbe from 1993-1995. As the 2018-19 season came to an end, the Trail Blazers finished their season at the NJCAA DII National Tournament for the fifth time in the history of the program and Hoyt has been a part of four of those highly successful seasons. As a sophomore point guard in 1994-95, Coach Hoyt was a part of the first national tournament team from JWCC, which culminated in a seventh place national finish. As a head coach, Coach Hoyt has been fortunate to lead the Trail Blazers back to Danville, IL three additional times (2014, 2015, 2019). The 2013-14 team did not place in the 16-team tournament, but the 2014-15 team fell in the National Championship game, finishing 2nd, and the 2019 team finished their run with a 6th place national finish.

  • 18 All-Region Selections
  • 20 All-Conference Selections
  • 3 Conference Freshman of the Year Selections
  • Coach of the Year honors in Conference (2014, 2015, 2018), the Region (2014, 2015), the District (2014, 2015, 2019) and the IBCA (2014, 2015, 2019)

In addition, John Wood basketball has had over 45 student-athletes sign scholarships to continue playing at the four-year level under Hoyt’s guidance.

Coach Hoyt earned a Bachelor's Degree from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, IA in 1997.  He has completed graduate work at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. Coach Hoyt is also the Director of Athletics at the college, leading the athletic department as the lead administrator. He has served in several Student Service positions in college and has been a college instructor for several years.

Coach and his wife Nikki celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary during the Summer of 2018 and are very proud parents of three children, Sydnie (17), Jake (14), and Luke (8).
